Candidemia due to Candida lambica in a neutropenic oncology patient: A rare case report

A 56-year-old cancer patient developed a rare blood infection caused by an unusual yeast called Candida lambica while receiving chemotherapy. Despite taking antifungal medication for prevention, the patient developed a serious fever and low white blood cell count. Effects of food waste mulch on the physicochemical quality and fungal community diversities of desert soil in Southeast Iran

Researchers tested whether mulch made from food waste could improve desert soil in Iran. They mixed food waste with clay and water, then spread it on desert plots over five months. The Heterogeneity of Ornamental Plants in Nurseries Increases the Chance of Finding New Hosts for Phytophthora

Ornamental plant nurseries in Mexico are frequently affected by Phytophthora pathogens that cause rotting, wilting, and dieback in flowers and ornamental plants. This study identified seven different Phytophthora species infecting 13 types of ornamental plants in Mexican nurseries, including two species never before reported as hosts for the pathogen anywhere in the world. The diversity of plants grown together in nurseries increases the likelihood that the pathogen will spread to new host plants and escape to home gardens and natural ecosystems.

Epidemiology of mucormycosis in COVID-19 patients in northwest Iran: Rhizopus arrhizus as the predominant species

This study found that COVID-19 patients in northwestern Iran who received high-dose steroid treatment developed serious fungal infections called mucormycosis. The infection was caused primarily by a fungus called Rhizopus arrhizus and affected mainly the sinuses and brain. The steroids used to treat COVID-19 weakened patients’ immune systems and triggered diabetes, both of which made them vulnerable to this dangerous fungal infection.
