Selected rhizobacteria strains improved the tolerance of Vicia faba plants to microcystins contaminated irrigation water and reduced human health risk

Farmers in semi-arid regions like Morocco often irrigate crops with water containing toxic cyanobacterial compounds called microcystins, which accumulate in food crops and harm human health. This study showed that inoculating faba bean plants with beneficial soil bacteria, particularly Achromobacter marplatensis, reduced microcystin accumulation in plants by 36% and promoted healthier plant growth despite contaminated water. The approach offers an affordable, sustainable solution to protect food crops in areas with microcystin-contaminated irrigation water.

Assessment of Heavy Metals in Mexican Dietary Supplements Using Total X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry and Health Risk Evaluation

Mexican dietary supplements commonly contain toxic heavy metals like lead, arsenic, and chromium. While individual metal levels in most supplements appeared safe when consumed alone, the cumulative exposure from multiple metals could increase cancer risk over a lifetime. The study found that some popular supplements, particularly those marketed for weight loss and blood detoxification, contained concerning metal levels, especially seaweed-based products and animal-origin supplements. Better regulation and labeling of dietary supplements in Mexico is urgently needed to protect consumers from long-term health risks.

Mercury Content in Three Edible Wild-Growing Mushroom Species from Different Environmentally Loaded Areas in Slovakia: An Ecological and Human Health Risk Assessment
