Diversity and Pathogenicity of Colletotrichum Species Causing Coffee Anthracnose in China

Researchers identified seven different fungal species causing anthracnose disease on coffee plants in China. Two of these species, Colletotrichum nupharicola and C. cliviicola, were reported for the first time as coffee pathogens. All seven species were capable of infecting coffee leaves, though with varying degrees of severity. These findings will help coffee farmers develop better strategies to control this major disease.

Diversity and Distribution of Colletotrichum Species Causing Anthracnose in China

Researchers identified 16 different species of Colletotrichum fungi causing anthracnose (a leaf and branch disease) in plants across five Chinese provinces. They discovered four previously unknown species and clarified the classification of several known species using DNA analysis. The study found that different regions had different predominant fungal species, with walnut being particularly susceptible to specific Colletotrichum species. These findings help understand and manage anthracnose diseases in economically important plants in China.

Colletotrichum scovillei and Prospective Biocontrol Agents Isolated from Asymptomatic Olive Trees

Researchers discovered that olive trees in Greece naturally harbor several species of fungi, including a newly identified disease-causing fungus called Colletotrichum scovillei. More importantly, they found that other fungi living harmlessly inside the olive tissue can protect the plant by fighting against the harmful fungi. Two of these protective fungi, KORD1f and KORD4f, reduced olive anthracnose disease symptoms by 67-73%, suggesting they could be used as natural alternatives to chemical fungicides for olive disease management.
