Medical Mycology Education in Brazil: A Cross-Sectional Survey of Medical Schools

This study examined how medical schools in southern Brazil teach students about fungal infections. The researchers surveyed 19 medical schools and found that while all schools include some mycology teaching, it is not offered as a standalone course and there are significant gaps in practical training, laboratory facilities, and instructor expertise. The study highlights that despite Brazil’s burden of serious fungal infections, future doctors are often not adequately prepared to recognize and manage these diseases.

Clinico-mycological study of superficial mycoses and correlation with anti-fungal susceptibility among the Candida isolates in a teaching institution of Western India

This study examined fungal skin infections in 330 patients in Western India, identifying which fungi cause these infections and which antifungal drugs work best. Researchers found that Candida yeasts were especially common in nail infections while Trichophyton fungi were more common in skin infections. The antifungal drug caspofungin was most effective against Candida, while the commonly used drug fluconazole showed increasing resistance.

Increasing postgraduate medical mycology research dissertations at Uganda’s higher institution of learning

Computational analysis of missense mutations in squalene epoxidase associated with terbinafine resistance in clinically reported dermatophytes

Certain fungal skin infections are becoming resistant to terbinafine, a common antifungal medication, due to genetic mutations in an enzyme called squalene epoxidase. Using computer models and analysis tools, researchers identified which mutations most strongly reduce the drug’s effectiveness and where the protein changes occur. Four specific mutations were found to prevent terbinafine from binding to its target, offering insights that could help develop better antifungal treatments.
