Prevalence of Tinea pedis in military personnel: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Athlete’s foot is a common fungal infection affecting the feet that is especially prevalent in military personnel due to their unique living and working conditions. This comprehensive analysis of 25 studies found that about 17% of military personnel worldwide have tinea pedis, with higher rates in hot and humid climates like the Americas and Australia. The infection is promoted by factors such as tight military boots, shared facilities, sweating, and poor foot hygiene. This study examined how two common antifungal creams (ketoconazole and miconazole) affect the complex community of bacteria and fungi living on the skin of people with athlete’s foot. Both treatments effectively reduced the harmful fungus causing the infection and improved symptoms, with ketoconazole working slightly faster. However, the researchers found that while these treatments reduced the disease-causing fungus, the skin’s normal microbial community did not fully recover to a healthy state, particularly in the spaces between the toes.

First Step on the Way to Identify Dermatophytes Using Odour Fingerprints

Researchers have developed a new method to quickly identify fungal skin infections caused by dermatophytes by detecting the unique smells (volatile compounds) they produce. Instead of waiting days or weeks for culture-based tests, this approach uses advanced chemical analysis to create a fingerprint of the fungus based on its odor. The study analyzed 47 different dermatophyte strains and found that each species and even individual strains have distinctive chemical signatures, which could one day allow doctors to diagnose infections rapidly using portable devices similar to electronic noses.
