Summary
This research expanded our knowledge of mushroom diversity in China by discovering and describing three new species and one previously unrecorded species of the genus Gerronema. The study combined detailed analysis of physical characteristics with DNA sequencing to confirm these as distinct species and provide tools for identifying them.
Impacts on everyday life:
– Contributes to documenting and preserving fungal biodiversity
– Helps mycologists and naturalists accurately identify mushroom species
– Advances our understanding of fungal evolution and relationships
– Provides foundation for potential future applications in medicine or biotechnology
– Supports conservation efforts by documenting species diversity
Background
Gerronema is a small omphalinoid genus found primarily in subtropical to tropical regions, with approximately 62 named species. Only three Gerronema species have been previously recorded in China. The genus has had a controversial taxonomic history and is considered heterogeneous by many researchers.
Objective
To describe three new species of Gerronema from China (G. baishanzuense, G. microcarpum, and G. zhujian) and report a new record of G. nemorale for China. To conduct phylogenetic analysis of Porotheleaceae based on ITS and nLSU sequences to support the taxonomic recognition of these species.
Results
Three new species of Gerronema were described: G. baishanzuense, G. microcarpum, and G. zhujian. G. nemorale was recorded for the first time in China. Phylogenetic analysis divided Gerronema into 10 clades, confirming it as polyphyletic. The new species formed well-supported monophyletic lineages. Detailed morphological descriptions and a taxonomic key for the seven Gerronema species now known from China were provided.
Conclusion
The study expanded the known diversity of Gerronema in China from three to seven species through the description of three new species and one new record. Morphological and molecular evidence supported the classification of these taxa in Gerronema while also confirming the genus as polyphyletic. A comprehensive taxonomic key was provided to facilitate identification of Chinese Gerronema species.
