Two new species of Entoloma subg. Cyanula sect. Asprella (Entolomataceae, Agaricales) from subtropical regions of China

Summary

Scientists have identified two new mushroom species in China belonging to the genus Entoloma. These small blue and magenta mushrooms, named E. qingluan and E. zilin, were discovered in subtropical forests of Fujian and Zhejiang provinces. Using microscopic examination and genetic analysis, the researchers confirmed these were previously unknown species and provided detailed descriptions for scientific identification and classification.

Background

Entoloma is a species-rich genus in the Agaricales order with over 2,000 reported species worldwide. The subgenus Cyanula has been debated taxonomically and has historically been classified as a section within Leptonia. Molecular phylogenetic studies revealed that sect. Cyanula belongs to the Inocephalus-Cyanula clade and was elevated to subgenus status.

Objective

This study describes two novel species within Entoloma subg. Cyanula sect. Asprella based on morphological characterization and phylogenetic analyses. The research aims to enhance understanding of Cyanula diversity in subtropical China where species diversity remains understudied.

Results

Two new species, E. qingluan and E. zilin, formed separate well-supported phylogenetic branches. E. qingluan is characterized by blue basidiomata with sterile lamella edges, while E. zilin features greyish-magenta scaly pileus with predominantly 2-spored basidia. Both species are assigned to sect. Asprella based on morphological and molecular evidence.

Conclusion

The discovery of these two species enhances understanding of Entoloma subg. Cyanula diversity in China. The study demonstrates incongruence between morphological and molecular phylogeny in sect. Asprella, suggesting need for refined taxonomic classification and continued species discovery.
