Summary
This research describes a newly discovered mushroom species from Thailand and confirms the presence of a rare mushroom species not seen in the country for nearly a century. The study used both physical characteristics and DNA analysis to identify and classify these fungi. The findings contribute to our understanding of fungal diversity in Southeast Asia.
Impacts on everyday life:
– Helps scientists track and preserve fungal biodiversity
– Contributes to the documentation of Thailand’s natural heritage
– Advances our understanding of mushroom evolution and relationships
– Provides reference material for future mushroom identification
– May lead to discovery of new useful compounds or applications
Background
Species in the genus Phallus, commonly known as stinkhorn, are gasteriod fungi in the family Phallaceae. The genus is characterized by a fetid odor from the gleba, with key morphological features including shape and surface of receptacle, coloration, volva with rhizomorphs, presence of hollow pseudostipe, size of basidiomata, and presence/absence of indusia. Some species are used for food while others have medicinal properties. Currently, Phallus consists of 95 species and is widely distributed across different geographical locations and climate types.
Objective
To describe and characterize a new species of Phallus (P. chiangmaiensis) discovered in Thailand and document the re-encounter of P. merulinus in Thailand after 93 years.
Results
A new species, Phallus chiangmaiensis, was identified based on unique morphological characteristics and molecular phylogenetic analyses. The species has a well-developed white indusium and campanulated caps with reticulate surfaces, distinguishing it from related species. P. merulinus was re-encountered and confirmed through both morphological and molecular analyses, representing only the second documented finding of this species in Thailand since 1977.
Conclusion
The study successfully characterized and established P. chiangmaiensis as a new species within the Phallus genus, supported by both morphological and molecular evidence. The re-discovery of P. merulinus in Thailand after nearly a century provides important documentation of this rare species’ continued presence in the region.
