Summary
This article explores how traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda and Chinese Medicine can help prevent and treat infectious diseases, including COVID-19. These ancient healing systems use natural herbs and lifestyle changes to boost immunity and fight infections more holistically. Scientific evidence shows that natural compounds like curcumin from turmeric have real antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. By combining traditional knowledge with modern research, we may develop better treatments for emerging diseases.
Background
Infectious diseases continue to pose global health threats, with antibiotic and antiviral resistance emerging as major challenges. Traditional medicine systems have been used for thousands of years and contain natural products with proven therapeutic potential. Most modern pharmaceutical agents can trace their origins to natural products, yet many natural resources remain unexplored.
Objective
To review traditional Indian and Chinese medicine systems, along with miscellaneous natural products, for their potential in preventing and managing microbial infections including COVID-19. The review aims to explore the full potential of natural medicine as complementary or principal therapy.
Results
Traditional medicine systems demonstrated effectiveness in managing viral and bacterial infections through immune modulation and holistic approaches. Curcumin showed antiviral, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties effective against COVID-19. Kerala’s implementation of Ayurveda helped flatten the COVID-19 curve, with average recovery time of seven days compared to 3-6 weeks with conventional treatment.
Conclusion
Traditional medicine systems offer valuable prophylactic and adjunctive management options for emerging infectious diseases. Integration of ancient treatment principles with modern science can create more potent and versatile therapies. Continuous research and support for exploring natural products are warranted to realize their full therapeutic potential.
