Summary
This research investigated how a traditional Chinese medicine called Bailing capsule helps treat breathing problems by preventing abnormal cell growth in blood vessels of the lungs. The study shows that this natural medicine can protect lung blood vessels from damage caused by low oxygen conditions.
Impacts on everyday life:
• Provides a natural treatment option for people with chronic lung diseases
• Demonstrates how traditional medicines can be scientifically validated
• Helps explain why some patients with breathing problems improve when taking this supplement
• Suggests potential for developing new treatments for lung conditions
• Shows how natural compounds can protect blood vessels from damage
Background
Cordyceps sinensis is a traditional Chinese medicinal fungi with various therapeutic properties including immunomodulatory, antioxidant, anti-aging, and anti-inflammatory effects. Bailing capsule, containing cultured C. sinensis mycelium, has shown effectiveness in treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, its mechanism of action against COPD is not well understood.
Objective
To investigate the effects of Bailing capsule on hypoxia-induced proliferation of pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) and explore its underlying mechanisms.
Results
The medicated serum significantly inhibited hypoxia-induced cell proliferation in a concentration-dependent manner. It also reduced hypoxia-induced production of ROS and ET-1, as well as expression of PCNA, c-fos, and c-jun in PASMCs.
Conclusion
Bailing capsule can inhibit hypoxia-induced PASMC proliferation by suppressing ET-1 and ROS production and inhibiting expression of PCNA, c-fos, and c-jun. This antiproliferative property likely represents one of the underlying mechanisms for its clinical effectiveness in treating COPD.
