Summary
A study tested whether a supplement made from Reishi mushroom could boost immune system function in healthy adults. Over 84 days, people taking the Reishi β-glucan supplement showed significant improvements in immune cells and antibodies compared to those taking a placebo. The supplement was safe and well-tolerated with no negative side effects, suggesting it may help strengthen the body’s natural defenses against infections.
Background
Fungi-derived β-glucan is a glucopolysaccharide with immune-modulatory properties. Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi) contains β-glucan that has shown promise in laboratory and in vivo studies for enhancing immune responses.
Objective
To investigate the efficacy and safety of Reishi β-glucan in modulating immune responses in healthy adult volunteers through a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial.
Results
The intervention group showed significant enhancements in CD3+, CD4+, CD8+ T-lymphocytes, CD4/CD8 ratio, and natural killer cell counts compared to placebo. Serum immunoglobulin A levels and natural killer cell cytotoxicity were also significantly improved with no adverse effects on kidney or liver function.
Conclusion
Reishi β-glucan effectively modulates immune responses in healthy adults by activating both innate and adaptive immune responses. The supplement was safe and well-tolerated, supporting its potential use for bolstering defense against opportunistic infections.
