Summary
Enokitake mushrooms and their active compound adenosine can boost testosterone production in mice experiencing fatigue and aging-related decline. The study shows that consuming adenosine-rich mushrooms may help restore testicular function and provide anti-aging benefits. This finding suggests that commonly available edible mushrooms like enokitake could be a natural functional food for managing fatigue and age-related hormone decline. However, human studies are needed to confirm these effects.
Background
Several studies have reported effects of mushroom consumption on testicular function in animal models. Mushrooms and vegetables contain adenosine which may affect testosterone production. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of enokitake mushroom and its active component adenosine on testosterone production.
Objective
To investigate the effects of enokitake mushroom and adenosine on testosterone production in primary cultures of testicular cells and in vivo using cisplatin-impaired and fatigue mouse models, and to identify the active component responsible for testosterone restoration.
Results
Enokitake extract increased testosterone production in cisplatin-impaired mice and promoted testicular function in fatigued mice through Insl3 upregulation. LC-MS analysis confirmed adenosine as the main bioactive component. A strong correlation was found between adenosine concentration and testosterone production-inducing activity with a correlation coefficient of 0.9825.
Conclusion
Adenosine from enokitake mushroom effectively restores testosterone production in both impaired and fatigued states. Mushrooms with relatively high adenosine content may be useful against aging and fatigue, warranting further research for potential human applications.
