Summary
Researchers discovered that adding nucleotides and nucleosides to oyster mushroom growing medium significantly increases mushroom yield and nutritional value. These compounds enhanced the dietary fiber and amino acid content while helping the mushrooms break down tough plant materials more efficiently. The study suggests that nucleosides are particularly effective and could provide a simpler, safer alternative to traditional mushroom cultivation methods that involve lengthy composting processes.
Background
Pleurotus ostreatus is a widely cultivated mushroom species rich in proteins, amino acids, and medicinal compounds. Traditional methods for enhancing yield, such as composting agricultural waste, are time-consuming and susceptible to mold contamination. Nucleotides and nucleosides play crucial roles in cellular metabolism and signal transduction across biological systems.
Objective
This study investigated the effects of supplementing nucleotides and nucleosides on the growth, yield, and nutritional composition of Pleurotus ostreatus fruiting bodies. The research aimed to develop a safer and more stable growth promoter for edible fungi cultivation as an alternative to traditional composting approaches.
Results
Nucleotide and nucleoside supplementation significantly increased mycelial biomass (up to 66.48% in nucleoside groups), total yield (up to 35.3% increase), and biological efficiency (up to 19.77% increase). Dietary fiber and amino acid content increased substantially, while protein and polysaccharide content showed mixed results. Nucleosides proved more effective than nucleotides, and exogenous supplementation enhanced lignocellulolytic enzyme activities.
Conclusion
Nucleotides and nucleosides effectively enhance Pleurotus ostreatus yield and biological efficiency while improving dietary fiber and amino acid content. The phosphate group in nucleotides has minimal impact; the nucleoside core structure is the crucial factor. This research validates nucleoside-based substances as novel biological stimulants for mushroom cultivation and can be extended to other commercial mushroom species.
