Summary
This research investigated how plant growth hormones can improve the cultivation of the medicinal mushroom Phellinus linteus. Scientists found that certain plant hormones, particularly NAA, can significantly increase both mushroom growth and the production of beneficial compounds called exopolysaccharides. This discovery has important implications for improving medicinal mushroom production.
Impacts on everyday life:
• More efficient production of medicinal mushrooms for health supplements
• Potential reduction in costs for mushroom-based products
• Improved techniques for mushroom cultivation
• Better understanding of how to optimize natural medicine production
Background
Phellinus linteus is a medicinal mushroom whose growth and metabolite production can be influenced by plant hormones. Understanding how phytohormones affect its growth and exopolysaccharide production is important for optimizing cultivation methods.
Objective
To investigate the effects of different phytohormones (indole-3-acetic acid, indole-3-butyric acid, and 1-naphthaleneacetic acid) on mycelial growth and exopolysaccharide biosynthesis in Phellinus linteus.
Results
The optimal concentrations were determined to be 1.0 mg/l for IAA, 1.5 mg/l for IBA, and 5.0 mg/l for NAA. With 5.0 mg/l NAA, mycelial biomass reached 6.24 g/l at 168h (15.98% increase) and EPS production reached 0.86 g/l at 192h (56.36% increase) compared to control. The molecular structure of EPS remained unchanged despite the treatments.
Conclusion
NAA at appropriate concentrations effectively stimulates both mycelial growth and EPS biosynthesis in P. linteus, though it does not alter the molecular structure of the EPS. This suggests NAA could be valuable for enhancing medicinal mushroom cultivation.
