Summary
This research investigated how medicinal mushrooms can help treat diabetes by examining their effects on blood cells. The study found that two specific mushrooms – Agaricus brasiliensis and Ganoderma lucidum – have significant potential in treating diabetes and its complications. Impact on everyday life:
– Provides a natural treatment option for diabetes that may have fewer side effects than conventional drugs
– Could help reduce healthcare costs by offering more affordable treatment alternatives
– Demonstrates the potential of traditional medicines in treating modern diseases
– Opens new possibilities for preventing diabetes complications
– Shows promise for improving quality of life for diabetes patients through natural interventions
Background
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is the third most common non-infectious disease leading to early disability and high mortality. The main symptom is hyperglycemia, which activates various metabolic pathways causing oxidative and nitrative stresses and secondary complications. Metabolic disorders from insulin deficiency significantly impede homeostasis and change physical, biochemical, morphological and functional properties of blood cells.
Objective
To analyze and summarize literature data and basic achievements concerning DM type 1 treatment using medicinal mushrooms and present results obtained from research on the effects of Agaricus brasiliensis and Ganoderma lucidum on blood cells in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.
Results
Administration of mushroom mycelium powder significantly decreased blood glucose levels by 2.4-2.7 times and reduced glycosylated hemoglobin in diabetic rats. The treatments normalized leukocyte formula, reduced apoptotic processes in white blood cells, restored red blood cell counts and improved their resistance to hemolysis. The mushrooms showed pronounced hypoglycemic, anti-anemic, membrane protective and apoptosis suppressive effects.
Conclusion
Medicinal mushrooms A. brasiliensis and G. lucidum, due to their composition and biological properties, are potential sources of new biopreparations for prevention and treatment of DM. Their mycelium powders demonstrated hypoglycemic effects, normalized blood cell parameters, and showed protective properties against diabetes-induced cellular damage.
