Effect of Golden Needle Mushroom (Flammulina velutipes) Stem Waste on Laying Performance, Calcium Utilization, Immune Response and Serum Immunity at Early Phase of Production

Summary

This research explored using golden needle mushroom waste as a natural alternative to antibiotics in chicken feed for egg-laying hens. The study found that adding mushroom waste to chicken feed improved egg quality and strengthened the hens’ immune systems without negatively affecting egg production. Impacts on everyday life: – Provides a sustainable way to produce healthier organic eggs without antibiotics – Offers an environmentally friendly solution for recycling mushroom waste – Helps reduce antibiotic use in food production, addressing antibiotic resistance concerns – Could lead to more affordable organic egg options for consumers – Demonstrates how natural alternatives can maintain animal health and food quality

Background

Golden needle mushroom (Flammulina velutipes) is an edible mushroom valued for its nutritional content and therapeutic properties in Asian countries. Due to recent bans on antibiotics as growth promoters in poultry, there is interest in finding natural alternatives. F. velutipes contains bioactive compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immune modulatory and antibacterial effects.

Objective

To evaluate the effects of F. velutipes stem waste (FVW) on organic egg production, calcium utilization, antibody response, serum immunoglobulin, and serum cytokine concentration at early phase of production in laying hens.

Results

No significant differences were found in egg production, egg weight, feed intake or feed conversion ratio between groups. The 4% and 6% FVW groups had significantly fewer unmarketable eggs. Calcium retention and eggshell calcium deposition were higher in FVW groups. Antibody titers against Newcastle disease and infectious bronchitis were significantly higher in FVW groups, particularly at 6% inclusion. Serum immunoglobulins and cytokines were also significantly elevated in FVW-fed groups.

Conclusion

F. velutipes mushroom waste can be used as an effective natural alternative to antibiotics for organic egg production while maintaining hen health and performance.
