Summary
This research analyzed over 3,300 scientific papers published between 2015-2025 to understand how traditional Chinese medicine helps fight viral infections by boosting the immune system. The study found that research on this topic has grown significantly, especially during disease outbreaks like COVID-19, with China leading in research publications. Key findings show that traditional Chinese herbal compounds work through multiple mechanisms including directly fighting viruses, reducing excessive inflammation, and enhancing vaccine effectiveness. The research points toward promising future applications of traditional Chinese medicine when combined with modern medical approaches.
Background
Viral infections pose significant global health challenges with substantial morbidity and mortality. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has demonstrated immunomodulatory properties that may address viral infections through both innate and adaptive immune mechanisms. However, comprehensive bibliometric analysis of research trends in this field is lacking.
Objective
This study aims to systematically identify research trends, knowledge hotspots, and emerging themes in TCM applications for viral infections through immune modulation from 2015 to 2025. The analysis seeks to guide future research directions and support evidence-based application of TCM in antiviral therapy.
Results
China led in publication volume with 1,008 articles and extensive international collaborations. Two major publication growth phases occurred: 2015-2016 (105.6% increase) and 2019-2021 (94.4% increase), with a peak of 490 articles in 2021. Five distinct research clusters emerged focusing on vaccines, antiviral mechanisms, innate immunity, COVID-19/inflammation, and cellular immune responses. Eight clinical trials demonstrated TCM efficacy in viral infection management and immune reconstitution.
Conclusion
This comprehensive bibliometric analysis reveals that TCM research for viral infections through immune modulation has surged significantly, driven by global disease outbreaks and increased recognition of TCM efficacy. Key research focuses include antiviral mechanisms, inflammation regulation, cytokine storm modulation, and vaccine adjuvant applications. Future research should employ advanced molecular techniques and evidence-based combination strategies to enhance clinical applicability and integration into contemporary antiviral frameworks.
