Background
Ganoderma lucidum spore powder has demonstrated various pharmacological activities and has become a new resource for health products and pharmaceuticals. However, limited natural resources, strict growth conditions, and difficulties in controlling stable yield and quality across different culture batches have restricted the development and utilization of G. lucidum spore powder.
Objective
To generate mutants of G. lucidum using ultraviolet ray irradiation to develop a strain with high spore powder yield and strong resistance to undesired microorganisms. The study aimed to improve upon the current main cultivar ‘Longzhi No.1’ which has poor resistance to other microbes.
Results
The study successfully developed strain UV119 which demonstrated 8.67% higher fruiting body yield and 19.27% higher basidiospore yield compared to the parent strain G0109. UV119’s spore yield was also 20.56% higher than the current main cultivar ‘Longzhi No.1’. The strain showed excellent resistance to contamination with a 99.15% fruiting body production rate in first growth cycle and maintained stable characteristics across 15 generations.
Conclusion
Ultraviolet ray irradiation proved to be an efficient and practical method for improving Ganoderma strain characteristics. The newly developed UV119 strain demonstrated superior spore yield and contamination resistance compared to existing cultivars, making it a promising candidate for commercial G. lucidum spore production.
