Summary
This study describes the diversity of Thaxterogaster mushrooms in Western China, a region with varied habitats ranging from tropical to temperate climates. Researchers identified eight new mushroom species and one species new to China using DNA analysis and microscopic examination. The study provides detailed descriptions and identification keys to help scientists and mycologists recognize these fungi in the field and understand their evolutionary relationships.
Background
Thaxterogaster is the second largest genus within Cortinariaceae, comprising nearly two hundred species worldwide. However, the diversity of this genus in China remains largely unknown. This study addresses the significant gap in understanding Thaxterogaster species in Asia, particularly East Asia.
Objective
To update the phylogeny of Thaxterogaster and document the species diversity present in Western China through morphological and molecular analyses. The study aims to describe new species and provide comprehensive taxonomic treatment for the genus in this region.
Results
The study analyzed 112 species belonging to seven subgenera and 23 sections of Thaxterogaster. Eight species new to science were described: T. crassimultiformis, T. lavendulaceus, T. flavocapitatus, T. pallidopurpurascens, T. atricapitatus, T. cupreus, T. sordidus, and T. alboparvus. One species new to China (T. indopurpurascens) and two new combinations were introduced.
Conclusion
The study provides a comprehensive phylogenetic framework for Thaxterogaster and significantly expands knowledge of the genus in Western China. The descriptions and identification key provided will facilitate further research and understanding of Thaxterogaster diversity in temperate and subtropical Asian forests.
