Three new species of Talaromyces sect. Talaromyces discovered in China

Summary
Scientists discovered three previously unknown species of Talaromyces fungi in soil samples from China. Background
Talaromyces species are common fungi found in various terrestrial, aquatic, and atmospheric environments, playing important roles in nutrient cycling, plant biomass degradation, and producing bioactive secondary metabolites. However, the species diversity of this genus remains incompletely understood. The genus currently includes about 208 species organized into eight sections, with section Talaromyces being the largest at approximately 90 species.
Objective
To discover and characterize new Talaromyces species from soil samples collected in China using a polyphasic taxonomic approach integrating morphological comparisons and molecular phylogenetic analyses based on four genetic loci: BenA, CaM, Rpb2, and ITS sequences.
Results
Three new species of section Talaromyces were proposed: T. disparis (AS3.26221), characterized by low growth rate and polymorphic conidia; T. funiformis (AS3.26220), a member of the T. pinophilus complex producing mycelial funicles; and T. jianfengicus (AS3.26253), belonging to the T. verruculosus complex with verrucose-walled conidia. All three species were supported by phylogenetic analyses of concatenated and individual loci with strong bootstrap support.
Conclusion
The proposal of these three new Talaromyces species is supported by both morphological distinctiveness and phylogenetic analyses. This work demonstrates that polyphasic taxonomy integrating morphology and molecular phylogenetics remains the standard approach for establishing new species in Talaromyces and related genera, emphasizing that isolation of pure cultures and discovery of new species are prerequisites for understanding and exploiting fungal biological resources.
