Summary
This research clarifies the true identity of a widely cultivated mushroom in Asia known as Pleurotus sajor-caju. The study reveals that this mushroom is actually a variety of another species called Pleurotus pulmonarius, rather than being its own distinct species. This finding has important implications for mushroom cultivation and taxonomy.
Impacts on everyday life:
• Helps mushroom farmers better understand what they’re actually growing
• Improves accuracy in mushroom identification and labeling
• Contributes to better standardization in the commercial mushroom industry
• Assists in maintaining proper scientific records for food safety and regulation
• Benefits consumers by providing accurate information about the mushrooms they consume
Background
In modern mycology, the name ‘Pleurotus sajor-caju’ has two distinct meanings – a strict taxonomical meaning referring to its nomenclatural synonym Lentinus sajor-caju, and a widely used biotechnological meaning referring to a strain determined as ‘Pleurotus sajor-caju’ that belongs to true Pleurotus.
Objective
To clarify the taxonomic status and provide the correct name for this problematic member of Pleurotus that is widely cultivated, especially in Asia.
Results
The analysis positioned the fungus within the range of infraspecific radiation of P. pulmonarius. The findings revealed that the fungus represents a tropical ecotype of P. pulmonarius, leading to the description of a new variety named P. pulmonarius var. stechangii.
Conclusion
The widely cultivated mushroom known as ‘Pleurotus sajor-caju’ is actually a variety of P. pulmonarius, now formally described as P. pulmonarius var. stechangii. A new anamorphic name, Antromycopsis stechangii, was also established for this taxon.
