Summary
Background
Medicinal mushrooms have an established history of use in traditional oriental medicine, with approximately 700 species of higher Basidiomycetes possessing significant pharmacological activities. Scientific studies on medicinal mushrooms have expanded exponentially during the last two decades, particularly in Japan, Korea, China and the USA. Many traditionally used mushrooms have demonstrated significant medicinal properties, including antitumor, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, hepatoprotective, antidiabetic, and hypotensive activities.
Objective
To investigate and document the antioxidant and antitumor properties of selected medicinal mushrooms occurring in South India, specifically Ganoderma lucidum, Phellinus rimosus, Pleurotus florida and Pleurotus pulmonaris.
