Immunomodulating Activity of Agaricus Brasiliensis KA21 in Mice and Human Volunteers

Summary

This research examined how the medicinal mushroom Agaricus brasiliensis affects immune function and metabolism in both mice and humans. The study found that regular consumption of this mushroom can safely boost immune system function while helping to improve metabolic health markers like body weight and blood sugar levels. Impact on everyday life: • Can be taken as a daily supplement to support immune system function • May help manage weight and body fat levels naturally • Provides a safe way to help control blood sugar and cholesterol • Offers protective benefits for liver health • Serves as a natural source of vitamin D and other beneficial compounds

Background

Alternative medicine, including traditional remedies and health foods, is used by 65-80% of the world’s population according to WHO. Agaricus brasiliensis has been reported to improve symptoms of lifestyle-related diseases and have immunoenhancing effects, though many studies were limited to animal models or small clinical trials.

Objective

To evaluate the immunomodulating effects and safety of naturally outdoor-cultivated Agaricus brasiliensis KA21 fruit body through both murine model studies and human clinical trials. The study aimed to examine antitumor, leukocyte-enhancing, and hepatoprotective effects in mice while measuring metabolic and immune parameters in human volunteers.

Results

In mice, A. brasiliensis showed antitumor effects, protected against hepatic injury, and modulated cytokine production. In humans, significant decreases were observed in body weight, BMI, percentage body fat, visceral fat, blood glucose and cholesterol levels. NK cell activity was significantly enhanced in the treatment group. No adverse effects were found even at 3x normal dosage over 6 months.

Conclusion

A. brasiliensis KA21 demonstrated both immunomodulating and metabolic benefits while showing excellent safety. The mushroom increased helper T cells and enhanced NK cell activity, contributing to antitumor and anti-inflammatory effects. In humans, it helped reduce obesity markers and improved metabolic parameters, particularly in subjects with borderline elevated levels. The results support its use as a health-promoting food supplement.
