Background
Amanita ponderosa are wild edible mushrooms that grow in specific microclimates of the Iberian Peninsula. They are important both for traditional consumption by rural populations and for their commercial value in gourmet markets. Mineral characterization is crucial for certification and commercialization processes of edible mushrooms.
Objective
To evaluate the inorganic composition of Amanita ponderosa fruiting bodies and their respective soil substrates from 24 different sampling sites across southwest Iberian Peninsula, analyzing variations in mineral content and establishing relationships between mushroom and soil mineral compositions using data mining approaches.
Results
The mushrooms showed high content of macroelements (K, P, Mg) and presence of important trace elements with low heavy metal contents within RDI limits. Bioconcentration was observed for K, Cu, Zn, Mg, P, Ag, and Cd. The study successfully generated explanatory segmentation models based on mineral composition, with Fe, Zn, and Ba content being key discriminators for mushroom clustering. Soil-based clustering showed correlation with Cr, Ba, and Zn soil composition.
Conclusion
A. ponderosa mushrooms showed mineral composition variations according to collection location, indicating substrate characteristics influence on fruiting bodies. The relationship between mineral elements in mushrooms and soils from different sampling sites provides important data for certification processes. The mushrooms demonstrated safe levels of heavy metals and beneficial mineral content within recommended dietary intake limits.
