Background
In the family Clavicipitaceae, several genera parasitize scale insects or whiteflies, including Aschersonia, Dussiella, Helicocollum, Hyperdermium, Hypocrella, Moelleriella, Orbiocrella, Regiocrella, and Samuelsia. Among these, Aschersonia, Hypocrella, and Moelleriella are relatively old genera with more species. Previous taxonomic revisions used three-gene phylogenetic analyses and morphological characters to classify these fungi.
Objective
To report and characterize three new species of Conoideocrella and Moelleriella from Yunnan Province, Southwestern China that parasitize scale insects and whiteflies.
Results
The study identified one new record species (Conoideocrella tenuis) and one new species (Conoideocrella fenshuilingensis sp. nov.) in the genus Conoideocrella, and two new species (Moelleriella longzhuensis sp. nov. and Moelleriella jinuoana sp. nov.) in the genus Moelleriella. Phylogenetic analyses showed each new species clustered into separate clades distinct from other known species. The species were distinguishable based on their morphological characteristics.
Conclusion
The discovery of these three new entomopathogenic fungal species provides valuable insights for further research into their potential use as biological control agents against scale insects and whiteflies. These fungi may also have applications in developing biopesticides and pharmaceuticals due to their metabolites’ biological activities.
