A Terrible Trip: Tubulointerstitial Nephritis and Uveitis Syndrome Triggered by Psilocybe Mushroom Ingestion

Summary

A patient experienced serious kidney and eye inflammation after ingesting psilocybe mushrooms, which are known for their hallucinogenic properties. This rare combination of symptoms, called TINU syndrome, had not been previously associated with mushroom use. The case highlights an unexpected and serious health risk from consuming hallucinogenic mushrooms, suggesting that the active compounds may trigger severe inflammatory responses in some individuals.

Background

Tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis (TINU) syndrome is a rare systemic inflammatory disorder. This case report documents an unusual presentation of TINU syndrome following psilocybe mushroom ingestion.

Objective

To report a case of TINU syndrome triggered by psilocybe mushroom ingestion. The study aimed to document the clinical presentation and establish the association between hallucinogenic mushroom consumption and this rare renal-ocular syndrome.

Results

Patient developed tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis following psilocybe mushroom ingestion, presenting with renal dysfunction and ocular inflammation.

Conclusion

This case demonstrates a rare adverse reaction to psilocybe mushroom ingestion resulting in TINU syndrome, suggesting a potential toxic or immunologic mechanism triggered by hallucinogenic mushroom compounds.
