The anti-fatigue and sleep-aiding effects vary significantly among different recipes containing Ganoderma lucidum extracts

Summary

Different recipes made from Ganoderma lucidum mushroom have different health benefits. This study tested two recipes in mice and found that one (PGB) was better for reducing fatigue and improving exercise performance, while the other (GBS) was better for improving sleep quality. The research shows that how you prepare and combine medicinal mushroom ingredients matters for what health benefits you get.

Background

Fatigue and insomnia affect approximately one-third of the global population and result from complex physiological processes involving energy depletion, metabolite accumulation, and oxidative stress. Ganoderma lucidum is a medicinal fungus with a long history of use in traditional medicine and contains bioactive components including polysaccharides and triterpenes that exhibit diverse pharmacological effects.

Objective

This study aimed to investigate the anti-fatigue and sleep-aiding effects of two different Ganoderma lucidum-based recipes (PGB and GBS) and determine how different formulations and ingredient combinations affect their therapeutic properties. The research sought to provide experimental evidence for developing specialized Ganoderma lucidum formulations targeting fatigue and sleep disorders.

Results

PGB treatment significantly improved anti-fatigue effects by prolonging swimming endurance (10.1 to 15.2 min), increasing glycogen levels, and decreasing lactate, urea nitrogen, and MDA levels. GBS treatment significantly improved sleep quality with reduced sleep latency (6.8 to 4.2 min) and extended sleep duration (88.3 to 152.5 min), while decreasing muscle MDA levels. Different formulations demonstrated distinct therapeutic effects despite containing similar base ingredients.

Conclusion

The anti-fatigue and sleep-aiding effects of Ganoderma lucidum extracts vary significantly depending on recipe formulation and ingredient combinations. PGB is more effective for anti-fatigue effects while GBS provides superior sleep-aiding benefits, providing a scientific basis for developing targeted Ganoderma lucidum formulations for specific health conditions.
